As the world Twenty 20 gets into full swing, we’ll have thoughts from South Africa on how far the revolution could go. AfRICA PLAYER: The advertisers will dictate how this is go. It won’t be the administrators who say, “No, no, no hang on 50 other crickets are the real thing and 20 other crickets are a bit of fun.” I think it’ll be the other way around. I think they’ll play one or two 50 other games in a series of six or seven 20 other games. REPORTER: There’s also news of an official rival to the rebel Indian Cricket League. And the MCC tells us Twenty 20 could even change the shape of the home of cricket. MAN: We are looking at a fairly significant rate of element of the grand. One that is of course keeping of the traditions and the fields, and the ambience of lots, but we are looking to it called In-Stadium Lots, similar to football stadiums. REPORTER: Also coming up, Harsha Bougley on Sachin Tendulkar’s final tour to England. Before all that though Stephen Fleming is the longest serving captain in the history of New Zealand’s test cricket, but after 80 matches as a successful and much admired leader, he’s been replaced by Daniel Vettori. It follows Fleming’s decision to retire from the one day game. He’ll now continue as a player in tests only, under Vettori’s leadership. Well John Myer spoke to New Zealand’s voice of cricket Brian Wattol and asked him if the news had come as a surprise. Brian Wattol: Well I suppose it is a little bit of a surprise because after the World Cup Fleming decided to retire as captain of the one day side. But I think he still has the desire to be part of the test match team and also lead the side. And I think that was pretty much accepted at the time when John Braceful was the man who had sole control of selection and the coaching. But that’s changed a little bit now, his role his not quite as strong in terms of the selection panel. And obviously the way that it is now organized the same panel has decided that they want to have a fresh face; they need to have the same captain going through and they decided that obviously Flemings days have been done and its now time for a new captain. JOHN MYER: Now many people rated Stephen Flemings as one of top test captains in the world. Just how good can Daniel Vettori become as a test captain? Brian Wattol: Well I think if he’s got the support of Stephen Fleming I think he could become a very good captain. He’s very astute; he’s very thoughtful. He knows the traditions and the history of the game; he’s a student of cricket; he’s a quality spin bowler as we all know. His batting at times has been a little erratic, he likes to think of himself as an all-rounder. I think the real test will be firstly captaining the side without Fleming and also captaining test matches with Fleming. But how well his game progresses? And we know his quality as a bowler and I guess it’s always the test of any captain that they are able to perform with the captaincy duties. I think it’s an inspired choice and he’s quite clearly the next in line in the New Zealand side. New Zealand will be lucky that they will have two strong personalities leading them through the next summer. REPORTER: That’s Brian Wattol here on World Cricket from the BBC world service on the future of New Zealand cricket without Stephen Fleming at the helm. Well news of his departure from the captaincy had led to speculation that Fleming might be about to join the Indian Cricket League, the rebel Twenty 20 competition that’s already signed up Inzamon, Brian Laura, and Lance Clusna to name but three. Instead though Fleming has signed up for a new competition to be run by the Indian board the BCCI and which is officially sanctioned by the ICC. They’re calling it the Champions Twenty 20 league and it’ll feature the top 2 clubs from India, South Africa, England, and Australia. There’ll also be an Indian Premiere League, again officially sanctioned as a rival to the rebel domestic league. Here’s what Lalut Modey, vice president of the BCCI, told the news conference. Lalut Modey: The aim of this project is to primarily to revitalize domestic cricket in India, to develop a domestic cricket Twenty 20 franchise model, which will equally provide players and spectators with this unique product. It will be developed a program for improving all our stadium facilities and infrastructure across the country. This will allow us to affectively manage the cricket product to be consistent with the changing demand of today’s world. REPORTER: Well the Australian legend Glenn McGrath has given his support to the new Champions league format as has the Indian test captain Rahul Dravid. GLENN MCGRATH: Crickets probably trying out for something like this I think we’ve seen the success of this in football especially in soccer where the national game and the club system exists very successfully. India is a place where this opportunity rightly takes off today because India today is the heart of the game. REPORTER: Well Sachin Tendulkar is another Indian star to give his backing to the new Champions league. Like Dravid he’s also missing the world Twenty 20 after a strong performance on the recent tour to England. Having helped India to victory in the test series, Tendulkar and co were beaten in the one-dayers, losing the deciding match at Lords. But could that have been Tendulkar final international match in England? The BBC’s Chris Florence was there and he asked the Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bougley how long the little master could continue. Harsha Bougley: I don’t know. I was a little bit perplexed by all this talk going on about Tendulkar getting out of the one day game. I’ve watched him seven wonders as you have. He’s looked like he’s enjoying every minute of it. I’ve noticed him since he was 14 and honestly he’s like a little kid to whom the game is his favorite toy. And you know what happens when you take a toy away from a little child I mean, such is not going to consider stealing his ball, but it is going to be the equivalent of taking his favorite toy away, so I would be very interested in how he plans his exit because I can’t imagine such without a cricket bat in hand. I see him increasingly missing the odd series, I don’t see him giving it up, missing the Twenty 20 which was tailored made for him, missing that. If there’s a little one day series somewhere he might miss 2 or 3 games in between but I see more of that rather than a clean break. CHRIS FLORENCE: And he’s finishing what is more than likely to be his last series in England, his last tour of England without a 100 in this summer. Harsha Bougley: I know to think the only 100 in 18 international innings has really only come from Anil Kumble. And to think he made what 490s 590s in the series, a couple against South Africa early on. But I think it’s too much to expect such for him to come back to England. And I’m sure he’s got fond memories he made that very romantic century in 1990 as a 17 year old trifle. In 1996 he played 100 that’s not very well remember where at age best when you produce a fly against a good England attack. 2002 he got a great 100 at Leeds so every time he’s come to England he’s left a little stamp behind. And I think he had done it this time as well. It’s just that the world got to accept that the look that they are seeing now from the look they were seeing before and that even the monarchs of the world can sometimes walk the streets like common men and struggle to play like you and I do in life sometimes Chris, but the fact that he’s willing to struggle, he’s willing to take balls to the body, he’s willing to let the players miss a little bit, he’s willing to make simple bowlers look better than they are where earlier he may have made them look stupid. But his willing to do that is I think another aspect of his character. He’s one of the most fascinating people I’ve meet in all the years I’ve covered cricket. REPORTER: This is the BBC world service. That was Harsha Bougley on the durability of Sachin Tendulkar. [/post]
